Access Ability

We raise awareness, within the community, schools and businesses of inclusion issues and becoming anti-discriminative organisations.

The project works with people with disabilities in the North Ayrshire area of Scotland to :

  • Reduce Isolation
  • Increase Social Interaction
  • Reduce Dependency
  • Improve Integration
  • Increase Self-Confidence
  • Increase Educational Attainment
  • Increase Community Identity

NAFOD

The Project assists the North Ayrshire Forum on Disability to acquire the skills to devise appropriate ways to collectively address discrimination.

We support the Forum to develop a solid base for social inclusion and become equal partners in North Ayrshire.

We empower people with disabilities, older people and carers to work in the wider community with statutory and voluntary agencies to the benefit of all.

The North Ayrshire Forum on Disability is the umbrella organisation of all the local disability Forums/groups in North Ayrshire. Formed in 1996, it has enabled local disability forums/groups to have more input to local policies and to look at the needs of local people within the community.

The Access Ability Project is a user-led community resource base, which offers vital services to disabled people in North Ayrshire and in the last three years has dealt with over 6,000 enquiries.

NAFOD/Access Ability have always worked with the Social Model of disability, that society creates barriers, not people with disabilities.

We work with partners in statutory, voluntary and community organisations within North Ayrshire on various disability issues. This ensures that people with disabilities have more input to the policies of local and national government which allows for informing, debating and promoting matters which seriously affect their lives.

NAFOD/Access Ability recognise the need to take action now to secure a wider funding base and to help with the developments of new roles, which meets the changing issues around disability and discrimination.

SERVICES

Access Ability will base its services on the social model of disability, which follows the view that it is society, its structure and barriers that create disability, not the persons impairment. Education of both people with disabilities and the public at large is very important and the key to true integration.

The Project achieves its aims through the range of services it provides and working under the management of the North Ayrshire Forum on Disability.

Access Ability Project services have been developed through working with North Ayrshire Forum on Disability members, service users and members of the local community.
